Metalcon construction system: the structure of the Canadian house
Metalcon (steel frame / structural galvanized steel) is the skeleton Canadian Houses builds with, on site. It is not a prefab kit house: it's Canadian construction, built on your land with high-precision steel framing.
What is Metalcon?
Metalcon is a dry-construction system that uses structural galvanized steel profiles (steel frame) instead of wood or concrete for the home's structure. It's the standard behind millions of homes in Canada and the US, adapted to Chile's climate and building code.
At Canadian Houses we build with Metalcon directly on your land (we don't ship an assembled house): each profile is engineered, cut and assembled to the millimeter, reducing errors, waste and timelines versus traditional construction.
Why build with Metalcon
Earthquake-resistant
Steel is light and flexible: it absorbs ground movement better than rigid, heavy structures. Key in a seismic country like Chile.

The dry structure lets walls be filled with continuous insulation, meeting and exceeding the current thermal code. Lower heating and cooling bills.

Made-to-measure prefabricated profiles and dry assembly cut timelines considerably versus concrete or masonry.

Unlike wood, galvanized steel doesn't feed termites or rot with moisture, and doesn't spread fire. Myths vs. reality of the Canadian standard.

With the right insulation and board combination, Metalcon walls achieve high acoustic comfort, ideal for noisy areas.

In Chile's rainy, humid south, galvanized steel avoids the moisture and pest problems typical of wood, keeping the speed of dry construction.

Frequently asked questions about Metalcon
Does Metalcon rust?
Not under normal conditions: galvanized steel (zinc-coated) is used precisely to resist corrosion, and it's protected inside the walls. That's why it's especially good in coastal areas with salty air.
Is a Metalcon house safe in an earthquake?
Yes. Steel is light and ductile, letting it absorb and dissipate seismic energy better than rigid, heavy structures. It's one of the most recommended systems for seismic zones.
Is it the same as a prefab house?
No. Canadian Houses doesn't deliver a shipped kit: we build with Metalcon on site, on your land, with the Canadian system. The word 'prefab' is used colloquially, but this is high-precision industrialized construction, not a factory-assembled panel house.
Is Metalcon more expensive than wood or concrete?
It depends on the project, but savings in timelines, waste and maintenance usually balance the cost. Use the calculator to estimate your project.
