Myths of the Canadian Standard: Are These Houses Safe Against Fire and Termites?
It is normal to have doubts. We come from a culture of "brick and cement". But technology has advanced, and the Canadian standard is not simply "a wooden house". Let's debunk the two most common fears.
Myth 1: "If it's light, it burns fast"
The Reality: Our houses are NOT made of structural wood. They are made of Galvanized Steel (Metalcon).
- Non-combustible: Steel does not burn. It does not add fuel to a fire.
- Retardant: We coat the entire structure with 10mm and 15mm Gypsum Board (Drywall). This material contains crystallized water molecules which, when exposed to fire, evaporate, delaying the temperature rise. We comply with F-15, F-30, and F-60 regulations as required.
- Does not collapse: Unlike a wooden structure that chars and gives way, steel maintains its structural integrity longer, giving vital minutes for evacuation.
Myth 2: "Termites will eat it"
The Reality: Termites don't like steel.
- Immune Structure: The skeleton of your house (beams, pillars, trusses) is 100% metal. No insect can feed on it.
- Total Protection: Even if you use decorative wood cladding or siding, the vital structure of the house is invulnerable. You will never have a master beam eaten away or a floor sagging due to pests.
Conclusion
The Metalcon system combines the best of two worlds: the speed and insulation of light construction, with the durability and non-combustibility of solid material (steel). It is, in fact, safer than many traditional mixed constructions.
