The Water Challenge: Harvesting and reuse systems for plots in the south
One of the main challenges for those buying plots in the Los Lagos, Araucanía, or Los Ríos regions is the feasibility of drinking water. With climate change altering precipitation regimes, depending on a well or water trucks is no longer always the best solution.
Water independence is the new standard of luxury and peace of mind.
Integrated Rainwater Harvesting
In traditional Canadian construction, it is extremely easy to integrate rainwater harvesting systems right from the architectural design stage. Instead of adapting unsightly tanks to an already finished house, we plan the flow of roofs and gutters so that the water is directed to underground storage systems or elegantly designed tanks that blend with the terraces and facades.
What is this water used for?
Rainwater, when properly filtered from leaves and sediments, is primarily reused for high-consumption tasks that do not require drinking water:
- Irrigation of gardens and orchards in summer.
- Washing vehicles and terraces.
- With additional purification systems and separate connections (designed in the home's interior piping layout), it can feed toilets and washing machines.
Designing for Sustainability
Building on plots demands a profound respect for the environment. It is not just about building fast with Metalcon or SIP panels, but ensuring that the home works symbiotically with the land.
