Double Barrier Against Moisture: The Secret to a House That Breathes But Doesn't Get Wet
Have you noticed that musty smell in beach houses closed for a long time? That happens because the house doesn't "breathe". At Canadian Houses, we apply a biological principle to construction: your house should function like your skin.
The Dual Function: Waterproof and Breathable
The Canadian standard uses high-tech water-resistant membranes (Tyvek type) that wrap the entire structure of the house. These membranes have a fascinating physical property:
- From outside: They are 100% impermeable to liquid water. Rain, fog, or snow cannot penetrate into the wall.
- From inside: They allow water vapor to escape. When you cook, shower, or breathe, you generate steam. If this steam gets trapped in the wall, it condenses and generates mold.
The Problem with Traditional Construction
Old wooden houses used felt paper, which cracks over time and loses its properties. Concrete houses, if not plastered with expensive additives, absorb water like a sponge. And if sealed too much without ventilation, they fill with mold in the corners due to condensation.
Our Technology: The Continuous Envelope
We install this water-resistant barrier over the structural board (OSB) and under the exterior cladding (Siding, Fiber Cement, etc.).
- OSB Protection: The structural wood never gets wet, guaranteeing lifetime durability.
- Indoor Health: By allowing vapor to escape, indoor air quality improves dramatically, reducing allergies and respiratory problems.
A Canadian house is a dry house. And a dry house is a healthy and warm house.
